Digital Declutter

Digital Declutter – Do you find yourself overwhelmed with digital clutter?

Clutter in your computer and mobile devices creeps up on you faster than you think. It affects your productivity, causes undue stress, not to mention eats up your storage space. Take a look at some of the items that you need to get rid of for a more organized digital life.

Digital Documents

Go through all the documents saved in your computer, as well as the ones saved on your cloud storage and delete the ones that you no longer need. Organize the remaining ones in properly named folders and make sure that each individual files also have file names that are apt for what the file really is. There’s nothing more frustrating than looking for a contract in a sea of contract files that are named contract1, contract1(1), etc.

Images

Same with digital documents, go through your photos and delete the ones that you no longer need, as well as duplicate images. Name them properly and organize them in folders depending on what works for you. It could be by location and date if you travel a lot, by subject type if you take a lot of still life shots – whatever will make it easier for you to streamline your photos.

Mobile and web applications

Check your mobile and web apps to see if they need to be updated. Delete the ones that you don’t have any use for to free up precious storage space.

Email

Unsubscribe from any newsletter, email list or product update subscriptions that you no longer need to get updates from. This is also true if you don’t really check your email all that often. Maybe you actually stay updated to product releases or sale announcements from a certain brand or store because you follow them on Instagram. So it goes to say that you don’t really need to double up on notifications from them.

Social Media

Take a look at the groups, pages and people that you follow. Do they post content that is actually useful to you? If you find yourself just scrolling past their posts 90% of the time, or if you find that the content that they post only bring about negativity and rude comment sections, maybe you’re better off unfollowing groups, pages and people.

YouTube Subscriptions

If you are subscribed to YouTube channels that don’t really post useful content, or maybe the quality of the content that they post are not what they used to be, unsubscribe from these channels. Channels that only drive negativity and topics that do not really benefit you in a positive way do not deserve to stay in the list of channels that you are subscribed to.

Basically, what you should be looking to get at the end of a digital declutter is bringing more zen in your life, finding yourself being more productive in the long run, and the added bonus of saving yourself from the risk of slowed down devices due to storage filled with things that you don’t really need.
