Step 1: Wet down the car exterior

Rinse your car thoroughly with a hose. This breaks up dry dirt and debris. You can use a soft sponge to scrub the exterior gently to prevent any dirt from scratching or damaging the paint.

Step 2: Bubble up

Combine 1/4 cup of liquid soap with 1 gallon of hot water to clean the entire car exterior, combine ¼ cup of soap with one gallon of hot water. Make sure to not use dishwashing soap as it can damage the finish of your car. Use a sponge to wash the exterior and a stiff-bristled brush for the tires and wheels.

Step 3: Rinse the car exterior

Hose your car down to remove the soap mixture. Mix 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water in a spray bottle. Spray the exterior of your car and wipe it with any absorbent cloth. You’ll do best with a chamois leather cloth, but any absorbent cloth will do. Use newspapers to wipe the car windows to avoid streaks.

Step 4: Clean the windows

Make a safer version of Windex to rid yourself of exposure to harmful chemicals while you clean your car windows. Mix one cup of water, one-half cup of vinegar and one-fourth cup of alcohol in a spray bottle. Spray your car windows solution onto windows and use newspaper to dry. Use plain vinegar to remove any bug splatters.

Step 5: Clean the car’s interior

Wipe down the interior with a clean damp cloth. Use it on the dash, center console, and other areas. Use the products below depending on what needs more attention in your car’s interior.

  • Rubbing Alcohol – Use this on leather or vinyl seats. It’s best to test it on a small hidden area first.
  • Rubbing Alcohol and Water – Use equal parts of rubbing alcohol and water on hard surfaces and wipe them down with fabric softener after.
  • Baking Soda – Use baking soda to absorb cigarette odors from your car’s ashtray. You can also use it to absorb any bad odors from the carpet.
  • Disinfectant Wipes – Wipe down hard surfaces, your car’s dashboard and glove box with disinfectant wipes to remove any musty or bad odors.

Step 6: Spot Cleaning

Treat any difficult stains as needed with these household products. You can snack on one of them too! Make sure to use a soft cloth to avoid damaging the exterior material of whatever you’re spot cleaning.

  • Baby Shampoo – Use baby shampoo to cut grease and grime.
  • Peanut Butter – Using peanut butter on tar and tree sap works like magic!
  • Rubbing Alcohol – The ever so trusty rubbing alcohol removes grime from windshield wipers.

Step 7: Cleaning the upholstery

After vacuuming your car’s upholstery, sprinkle cornstarch on any stains and leave it to work for 30 minutes. Vacuum up the cornstarch after. For tougher stains, you can create a paste of cornstarch mixed with a small.amount of water, spread the paste on the stain and leave it to dry so it’s easier to vacuum up.

For grass stains, mix equal parts of white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and warm water. Rub it on the stain and rinse with water.

After all, this is done, you can place dryer sheets (any variant) under the floor mats, in storage pockets, and under the seats to leave a fresher feel.

Bonus tip: Cleaning the headlights

Wipe your car’s headlights with a damp cloth. Using a circular motion, rub white toothpaste on the surface of the headlights. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and rinse it thoroughly with water.
