Stop Procrastinating: Why should you get rid of your stuff?
Procrastinating is one of the biggest blocks in your journey to an organized home and a seamless moving experience. Be it being too sentimental about the things you’ve accumulated in all the chapters of your life or your myriad of reasons on why you just can’t bring yourself to let go of stuff. No time, what if I can fit into them again, I’ll get those fixed soon (but never did in years), it was too expensive or I could learn to use that someday. I could go on and on, but what you’re really here for is to get some sense and finally get out of that rut in the lazy limbo. So here are 10 reasons why you should get rid of your stuff before moving to a new home.
Getting rid of things as soon as you know that you will be moving is a huge time saver. Starting sooner than later gives you time to sort through the really important stuff that you will keep and what really needs to go. Once you’re over this hurdle, it will be a lot faster to pack your stuff.
There will surely be some valuable items in the things that you decide on letting go of. Why not make money off of them? Set up a garage sale or sell these items online. Make sure that you sort through your stuff and have designated bins for which ones will be sold, donated or trashed. This way, the items that should be for sale won’t get mixed up with items for the trash or for donation.
Unnecessarily holding onto things takes up emotional energy. While getting rid of things can be hard at first, you’ll find that it makes room for space not only in your home but more importantly, in your everyday life. This is especially true if the stuff that you end up getting rid of goes to goodwill or to friends and family whom you know will have more use out of these items.
Take the leap! Start with one hour a week then gradually increase the time that you take to sort through your stuff and deciding on which ones should be left with you. You’ll be surprised with how much progress you can make in just a short span of time.
Unused or unwanted items are just accumulating dust and ultimately just losing their potential to be used for their original purpose. Forgotten shoes and bags get worn out without ever seeing the light of day, makeup or skincare products go bad without ever being opened, or brand new clothes get holes from moths or ants. You get the point. So let them go. Someone else will get lots of use out of it!
The less stuff you have, the more you’ll appreciate the value of seeing what’s really important. The less you’ll want to accumulate more stuff in the future and the less you’ll spend.
Think about it. The less stuff you have, the easier it is to maintain a clean and organized home.
A lot of the things that you take for granted could mean a lot for other people. Think about that the next time you still decide to keep stuff that you know you will never use. Each time you donate anything to goodwill, you do a good deed. You get to help other people while enriching your spirit.
Believe it or not, drowning in clutter and having an unorganized home could more or less block your thought process and hinder decision making. Freeing yourself from this will open your eyes to see what’s really important for you to focus your time and energy into.
Enjoy your clear open spaces and the happiness it brings you! Feel the openness in your life and welcome in good things. Some worthwhile alone time or spending more time with friends and family.
